Fighting repression and Islamophobia from Amsterdam to Palestine

Discussion meeting organized by the Amsterdam branch of the International Socialists.
16 december 2024 7:00 Pieter Nieuwland, Pieter Nieuwlandstraat 93, Amsterdam

The events of last November, when violent and racist Maccabi supporters came to Amsterdam, have been a boon to the far-right. Rarely have events been framed as rapidly as they were when the governments of the Netherlands, Israel, and even the United States have framed them. By now, we know the situation was much different.

The Dutch cabinet, meanwhile, has taken these events as their reason to crack down on Palestine demonstrations and civil rights and to increase their Islamophobic rhetoric. So what happened? How do we respond to this wave of hate that followed? How has this response affected Muslims and pro-Palestinians in Amsterdam?

Join our conversation on Islamophobia, the right to protest, and what really happened in Amsterdam. The Speakers will be Jazie Veldhuyzen, local council member for VONK, Bilal Ben Abdelkarim, author of a book on growing up as a second-generation Moroccan in an increasingly islamophobic country (Van Dankbaar naar Strijdbaar) and Loraine Smith of the Internationale Socialisten.
